When planes fly above clouds, they're in what pilots call "the flight levels." At these altitudes, there are several advantages:
1. Better fuel efficiency due to thinner air and less drag
2. Avoiding most weather disturbances that occur closer to the ground
3. Clearer conditions for navigation and flight
4. Less turbulence (though high-altitude clear air turbulence can still occur)
From a passenger's perspective, looking out the window to see a sea of clouds below can be breathtaking. The clouds often appear as a fluffy white landscape stretching to the horizon, with occasional breaks revealing glimpses of the earth below. On particularly clear days, you might see multiple cloud layers at different altitudes.
The view of sunrise or sunset from above the clouds is especially striking, as the sun casts vibrant colors across the cloud tops without the filtering effect that occurs when viewed from the ground.
