The Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia has named Sir Mark Elder as its music director, from September.Elder, 77, stepped down last year after quarter of a century as head of the Halle Orchestra in Manchester.
His duties in Valencia will comprise two operas and two symphonic concerts a a year. The orchestra has a roll of 76 musicians at present.
The artistic director of Les Arts, Jesús Iglesias Noriega, said: ‘Sir Mark Elder is one of the greatest names on the international music circuit. His formidable professional career, immeasurable musical background and impeccable professional discipline anticipate a period of excellence, growth and success for the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana and also for Les Arts.’
After Manchester’s murk, Mark might need sunglasses most days at work.
