One of the ways we can get stuck in a rut with writing new metal riffs is we tend to get hung up on a particular style or subgenre.
This isn't always a bad thing. However, you can find yourself trying too hard to make your riff fit that style.
Instead, why not allow yourself (and your song) to have the freedom to flow in the natural direction it's going in as you write it.
As metal musicians, it can also be easy to get caught up in comparing ourselves to other musicians.
With YouTube and social media, amazing guitarists are all over the place. Take a step back and just know that you have your own unique talent and your own gift to share with the world.
Acknowledging this will give you the freedom to simply be yourself and write your own music in your own way.
Also, try focusing more on the big picture - your song.
Ask yourself questions like:
Is this riff best for the song or this part?
Am I trying to make this riff too complex?
Is the riff too simple for the song?
The riff is only a small part of your song. Sometimes that may not even be the thing that hooks your audience and listeners. It could be the simplest part of the song they like because of the powerful lyrics or melody.
Sure, write killer riffs but don't get too hung up on them because the song is so much greater than the riff.
