Next on the itinerary was the Spegazzini Glacier, which is named after Carlos Luis Spegazzini, the Italian-Argentine botanist who was the first to study the local flora. The main characteristic of this glacier is its height which reaches 135 meters along its front. This makes it the highest glacier in Los Glaciares National Park and one of the most important.
At one point during the boat tour, the guides fished a piece of ice from the lake, so guests had the option to sip whiskey with glacial ice.
Halfway through the cruise, we disembarked in a place called Puesto de las Vacas, which literally translates to cow stall. This is a remote part of Los Glaciares National Park, where a Finnish-Chilean couple lived and whose job it was to capture the wild cows who escaped from their estancias, and bring them back into town.
That afternoon we also visited the Upsala Glacier and Bertacchi Glacier, before entering Canal de los Témpanos, also known as the Iceberg Channel.
Then it was time for the main attraction: Perito Moreno Glacier! This particular glacier is the icon of Los Glaciares National Park. It’s the reason why people travel all the way to southern Patagonia...to see this one glacier!
What is so special about the Perito Moreno Glacier? Well, for starters it’s one of the few glaciers in the world that is still growing. It’s also pretty massive! The glacier’s front is 5 km long, its height above water is60 meters, but its total depth is about 170 meters - so you're actually only seeing a small part of what it is.

🌅 Good Morning from El Calafate: Excited for a Glacier Adventure!
Bright and early, we kicked off a truly unforgettable day in Patagonia—signing up for a full-day glacier boat tour out of El Calafate. With calm winds, clear skies, and high spirits, we set out for an adventure that promised up-close views of some of the most magnificent glaciers in Los Glaciares National Park, Argentina. This would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, exploring the largest lake in the country and hiking to spots most travelers never see.
🛥️ Setting Sail: Gourmet Glacier Tour on Lago Argentino
The boat set sail at 9:00 AM for a full day on the water. Our tour, aptly named Glaciers Gourmet, included options for a fancy tasting menu on a private deck or a gourmet lunchbox—our pick for the day. As we cruised away from the dock, we eagerly anticipated being let onto the deck for those first magical views.
🧊 Icebergs, Coffee & First Glacier Sighting
Sipping cappuccino and nibbling pastries, we had our first jaw-dropping encounter: a floating iceberg, its color an otherworldly blue. It was a surreal sight, and just the beginning of the natural wonders to come. Soon, the staff announced it was safe to head outside, where crisp Patagonian air met us as we floated past more icy giants.
🥃 Fishing for Ice & Whiskey with a View
A highlight for whiskey lovers: the chance to fish glacier ice from the lake and use it to chill your drink—an authentic Patagonian experience!
🗻 Glaciers Galore: Seco, Heim & Spegazzini
Throughout the day, we encountered glacier after glacier, each more impressive than the last.
Seco Glacier: A hanging glacier, aptly named "dry" due to its receding ice.
Heim Glacier: Another hanging glacier, famous for the dramatic meltwater waterfalls cascading down the mountainside.
Spegazzini Glacier: The tallest in the national park, with a front stretching 135 meters high. These views left us speechless—far grander and more numerous than we’d imagined.
🧊 Cruising the Iceberg Channel & Perito Moreno Glacier
In the afternoon, we entered the Canal de los Témpanos (Iceberg Channel), cruising toward the legendary Perito Moreno Glacier. This glacier is the park’s superstar—one of the few advancing glaciers in the world. Its five-kilometer-long face rises 60 meters above the lake, but the full depth plunges to 170 meters. Seeing it from the water was breathtaking; it’s a sight you can never truly capture on camera.
