In 2017 Colston Hall presented the premier performances of the Monteverdi 450 Series, a landmark semi-staged presentation of Monteverdi’s three surviving operas – Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, L’incoronazione di Poppea and L’Orfeo – conducted by Sir John Elliot Gardiner to mark 450 years since Monteverdi’s birth.

As well as presenting these world-class operas our sister organisation Bristol Plays Music created the education initiative with Monteverdi Choir and Orchestras to introduce the music to young people and, in the words of choir leader David Ogdan, "take all the ideas that they've experienced and apply them to lots of different pieces of music that they sing."

In May 2018 the Monteverdi 450 series won the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award in the Opera and Musical Theatre category.
