The state flag of Minnesota we know today was adopted in 2023, but the first flag of the state was adopted in 1893. For much of its history, the flag featured the official state seal. In more recent years, the seal faced scrutiny for its depiction of a European settler and a Native American, which implied an expansionist message in the time of Manifest Destiny and the Indian Removal Act. Serval attempts to update the seal, and subsequently the flag, were made over the years, and the movement finally found success in 2023, when the Minnesota Legislature established the State Emblems Redesign Commission.
