Filling up systems such as dry firewater systems can cause significant unbalanced forces in your piping, causing displacements and possibly failures in the lines. It is difficult to accurately predict these forces due to the three dimensionality of the waterfront.

Dynaflow Research Group is developing a line filling module for our surge analysis software package BOSfluids to realistically determine these forces. We are improving the accuracy of the predicted unbalanced forces using CFD analyses. The interaction between the waterfront and different geometrical aspects of piping such as bends, Tees and different equipment, like the orifices in the video, are analyzed. The results from these CFD analyses will be used to improve our understanding of surge behavior during line filling.
