William Bell - Happy - Stax : 128 DJ (45s)
Carrying on our theme of 50 years anniversary of Cleethorpes allniters at "The Pier", it would not have been out of place for the Cleethorpes, members to express their perpetual camaraderie, by celebrating one of Cleethorpes most resplendent of DJ's "Bub"
Although "Bub" never played "The Pier" he was for many Cleethorpes devotees the most memorable DJ in the history of that East Coast Northern Soul movement and this was his theme tune that always lifted The Winter Gardens a cold seaside walk, south of "The Peir"
Before you today is a rare flawless 22nd August 1969 British demo of "Bubs" theme tune, he featured in every "Cleethorpes" Winter Gardens set. After his imposing larger-than-life frame, cleaned the playing surface in vigorous circular movements with a mixture of sweat and love on his tee-shirt, his on stage showmanship, an exuberant display to entertain the dancers who knew "Bub" was preparing "Happy" to elevate his anticipated set to its zenith.
"Bub" was Cleethorpes' "entertainer"... a DJ who oozed charismatic wit, engaging charm to captivate the crowd, with more than just his brilliantly selective jubilant choices of Northern Soul dance.
I actually had this 45 in my DJ box., poised to celebrate this great man's contribution to the fabled Mary Chapman instigated NS movement born in Lincolnshire but rapidly spreading nationwide. Rivalling and many consider the betterment of "The Wigan Casino" experience encompassing all that was superior from The Blackpool Mecca playlists, discovering many exclusives, and always avoiding the bewildering crass "Joe 90" themes etc. Bub would certainly have shunned Tony Blackburn album track "I'll Do Anything" version but may have covered it up as "Lenny Gamble" but only for a laugh, because "Bub" had two priorities, first and foremost to play uplifting Northern Soul. Secondly to enthrall... like no Northern Soul DJ had done before him or in fact since his untimely passing.
R.I.P. Bub the top "showman" of Cleethorpes allniters, never played "The Pier" but I'm pretty certain if I'd played "Happy" at "The Pier" reunion the whole crowd would have been paying inwardly paying homage to his unique style and uplifting character.
Great memories "Bub" there could be no finer tribute to this cherished DJ than to listen to "Happy" because you made so many people "Happy" with your monumental performances... at the next "reunion" I will certainly be airing your "theme tune"
Underlining, the Cleethorpes' spirit of etrernal friendship and loyalty among members of a group, respect to Mazry Chapman also respect for the impressive camaraderie this Northern Soul destination gave birth to.
