The low-income group people continued to suffer at the open markets sales points of the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh as they had to wait for hours under the scorching sun for the trucks with essentials to arrive.
Many of them returned empty due to supply shortages after waiting for hours. In some places, the truck did not arrive at all.
People at different points in the capital, including Mohammadpur, New Market, Lalbagh, Arambagh and Motijheel waited for three to four hours for TCB trucks to buy edible oil, lentil, sugar and onion at subsidised rates.
At Mohammadpur opposite of town hall market, a truck came at about 1:15pm, triggering a mad rush among people who started running after it as soon as it reached the sales point.
Several women complained that they were thrown out of the lines and were beaten by people belonging to the ruling party.
Asked why they were beating women and removing them from the queue, TCB employee Abdul Jalil, said that local ward councillor’s men were doing it to establish discipline at the sales point.
He said they would give a serial number in their hand once discipline was established and then they would sell goods.
‘It is very unfortunate that we are unable to sell goods to everyone. The number of people is more than the products we have,’ Jalil added.
