Then the quiet feeding got interrupted as Jackie announced another fish delivery from papa Shadow. With so many food deliveries each day, there is a large stockpile on the nest.
Today, as Shadow fed his precious fluff bundles, the bigger chick broke out into some of its first bits of ‘wingersizing’—flapping its tiny wings to start practicing and building its flight muscles. This adorable exercise will continue with increased frequency and skill as the chicks grow.
This afternoon, both chicks had some dad time, sitting in front of Shadow while he fluffed up the nest bowl. But when visitors showed up, Shadow immediately went into guard duty and Jackie instantly flew in to the front balcony to help.
After more feeding, both chicks looked completely content and relaxing in the nest bowl…
…but, no sense in relaxing when you could be having fun. When the bigger chick laid down after eating, the smaller chick couldn’t resist bonking the back of the bigger one’s head…but whoops, the big one popped right back up and bonked back. Oh well, at least the little one had tried. But with the return bonk, the small one quickly laid down, as chicks do when they are showing their submission to the other one. – Please know, it does not mean they are hurt or unconscious, but simply doing what eagle chicks, and many animals, do to wave a white flag and show submission…
…and a short time later, both chicks were sitting up, with full crops, enjoying the sunshine next to mom.
We thank you all for allowing Jackie and Shadow and their chicks to add awe, wonder and a little bit of fun to your life!
Sandy
