Transcript: Why do most people in China live to the east of this line? Well, it's because only a small 5% live on the western side. Surprisingly, this western region is home to just 70 million people. Sounds like a lot, right? But hold on, just on the other side of this line, there are over 1.3 billion people. That's nearly four times the population of the United States! So, why does this population divide? It all comes down to China's geography. Thousands of years ago, ancient Chinese civilization flourished around two rivers: the Yangtze and the Yellow River. These rivers blessed the eastern region with some of the world's best farmland. With abundant rain and a warm climate all year round, it was an ideal place for humans to settle.
Fast forward to today, and you can see why so many people ended up here. But in the west, you'll find some of the driest deserts on Earth. Because, the Himalayas act as a barrier, stopping monsoons from the south from reaching China. Plus, cold air from Siberia brings extreme temperatures that aren't conducive to sustaining a large population.
