Now for something completely different! In 1980s Japan, the "new music" genre morphed into a new urban, heavily American inspired pop sound dubbed "City Pop" featuring soulful vocals crooning about love, life, and youthful pursuits over funky drum machine beats, synthesizer melodies, horn sections, and the occasional blistering guitar solo. Simultaneously, Japan's economy was booming like never before and its cities became playgrounds for a new breed of young urban professionals with money in their pockets and dreams of a very different life than what their parents lived. Of course, the economic boom would not last forever and the city pop soundtrack to the lifestyle would eventually become passe and trite - this was the Bubble Economy. City Pop music, for me at least, has come to symbolize a lost place and time, which, as different as this sound is to some of my more experimental offerings, ends up being a prominent feature in my work, so it's not as out of left field as it might seem.
As cheesy as it can be, I love this genre for its blend of bubblegum pop and jazz, funk, soul, and boogie. As some of you know, I've been working on my DJing skills for the last few months. On that front, this represents one of my first forays into spinning "pop" music with more traditional song structures, vocals, choruses, bridges, etc. which really is a whole different ballgame to DJing jungle and dnb. Hopefully you don't find this mix to be too horrible. If you've got tips or feedback, feel free to leave them in the comments below.
Enjoy!
