Today, the island remains divided: one part under Indonesian control, the other, Timor-Leste, independent since 2002. In the most remote villages, people live completely cut off. Their only link to the outside world is a rough, often flooded track, where a single mistake can be deadly. Yet, for many farmers, this risky journey is the only way to sell their crops at the market in Dili, the capital. After 10 grueling hours on the road, disappointment is common - the reward often far less than the effort.
