Download the full 12 hour version here: While suffering through norovirus after the holidays I was listening carefully to the fans in my bedroom and I noticed deep down under the random noise of air moving around there was a very slight hum of background mains voltage.
I thought I might have been a bit delusional since I've never noticed this before, so I got out a frequency and spectrum analyzer and studied the fan noise a bit more. I wasn't imagining things, there is a distinct frequency spike at exactly the mains voltage of my house ( ~ 124 hz ) for all of the fans I've tested so far. It is especially noticeable when first turning on a ceiling fan before the blades start spinning and obscure the noise.
I then started playing around with incorporating this frequency into some carefully layered brown noise. This video and sound is a result of my latest attempt at recreating this effect. If you listen carefully you should be able to hear a very faint hum deep down in the mix, and there's a characteristic of having it there that makes it sound much more natural to me, and more like turning a real fan on in a room.
