Jack Jobst, who performs as fina, is a multi-instrumentalist and producer based in Brooklyn by way of Maryland. He writes the kind of pop hooks that pull you in immediately, kind of like if The Beatles were hip to LCD Soundsystem and were armed with a Juno 106. His latest release, a collection of 5 singles, is deceptively complex. Synthesizers spool and unspool in unexpected places, and angular guitar parts give you whiplash. Jobst plays nearly everything on these songs, and enlisted only the help of mix engineer and co producer Sahil Ansari and venerable mastering engineer Alan Douches. Jobst’s experience of executing these songs was something that was life-affirming, destabilizing, and joyful, and so is the experience of putting these songs on and losing yourself in the sound.
