Welcome to your weekly UAS news update we have 5 stories for you; A Big Update on the Drone Ban with the NDAA bill, DJI Flip Leaks, DroneUp gets Part 119 Cert, Skyebrowse New Interior Mapping, and the FBI is now investigating those drones over New Jersey.
In our top story it appears the House and the Senate Leadership are attempting to bypass a vote on the NDAA by assembling a bill together.
The final version of this bill will then be sent to BOTH chambers for a quick vote up to the President's desk.
Some in the leadership are pushing for the Countering CCP Drones Act Language to be added to the new version of this bill.
The Countering CCP Drones Act would add DJI to the FCC's entity list, stating: "telecommunications or video surveillance equipment produced by Shenzhen Da-Jiang Innovations Sciences and Technologies Company Limited".
Time is limited so please reach out to your Representatives and Senators this week.
If you'd like to learn more, we'll leave a link in the description for a full video about this from Vic at DSPA.
I have a lot more that I'd like to say about this, and we will be having a longer discussion on Post Flight, in the Premium Community on Monday.
we got a bunch of leaks about a new DJI Drone model called the “Flip”.
This information was posted on X by long time leaker Jasper Ellens and includes a few images of the supposed new drone which is said to be a Mini 5 Replacement.
This flip appears to include LiDAR obstacle avoidance, a 3 axis gimbal, and ducted propellers.
Currently there is minimal information on camera specs and flight time, but we do have a rumored 3110mAh 2S battery.
Pretty pixelated images now with discussions suggesting a January 2025 release.
We’ll keep you updated if we see more!
Next up, DroneUp announced this week they’d received a Part 135 Certificate, which allows them to operate as a Part 135 air carrier.
In addition to this approval, they also got permission to expand BVLOS operations to 5 miles from their delivery hubs.
According to DroneUp, the 3 to 5 mile increase results in a 300% increase in the number of households that are now eligible for delivery.
Currently DroneUp is flying for Walmart in several locations around the Dallas area and Riverside Health Systems in Virginia.
DroneUp also said that the current cost of delivery is $30, which they hope to reduce by using an automated delivery system.
Now, this isn’t cost to consumer, but the total cost to complete the mission, which is currently a bit much for most folks I think.
We’ll keep you updated when we see more!
Last up, The FBI is now investigating the large drones seen over New Jersey.
While we don’t normally teach anything during news update, let’s quickly review the lights on traditional aircraft using our trusty Cessna 172 Model.
We have strobe lights on both wing tips and the tail, A red beacon light on the top of the tail, and then navigation lights.
The navigation lights are situated on the wing tips and the tail, with Red on the left wing, Green on the right wing, and white facing backwards.
Last up, aircraft have landing lights, which are also white and face in the direction of travel.
Now, let’s take a look at one of these videos of the supposed drones.
Looks to me like that’s an airliner rather than a large drone at low altitude…
If you are in NJ and you’ve seen some of these “drones”, leave us a comment below and let us know if it looked like the video here!
