A live synthesizer jam performed entirely on hardware.

Depending on how you count it, this is the seventh or eighth song in my series that I've been calling "the new acid". It mainly focuses on dark and driven timbres with funk tempos, dark music you can dance to. With these songs, I usually start with composition basics in the box, and then export audio loops to the Ableton Push 3 standalone for performance.

The Push 3 standalone is a powerhouse groovebox for live performance, and the capability and customizability allows me to create a complex set of performance macros. One really nice feature of the Push 3 standalone is that while I create new songs and upload them, I'm building out a live set full of songs at the same time.

While the Push 3 standalone could handle everything by itself, it's fun to get more gear on the table and generate some unique sounds. Here, I finally leaned into the acid of "the new acid" and added a 303, the Cyclone Analogic Bass Bot TT-303 MkI. It sounds fantastic, and fits the song's sound even better with some fuzz (the Winnipeg Electrical Co. Homework Series Fuzz) plus tape delay and saturation (the Strymon Deco).

Altogether, a really fun day making a kind of electronic music that doesn't normally get made. While Ableton Live is held in high regard, and there are valid criticisms of the Push 3 (especially as a composition device), I think the Push 3 standalone is underrated as a performance device.

Performed and recorded live to two stereo outputs (one for the Push 3, and one for the 303), with EQ, compression, and limiting on the master.
