How fast do gas particles actually move?

If we’re studying an ideal gas, then its particles move at a range of different speeds - some slowly, and some more quickly. The distribution of particle speeds for an ideal gas is given by the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution.

This distribution accounts for the mass of the gas particles, and the temperature of the gas. When we plot the distribution, we see that it peaks at some modal speed, or the most common speed at which particles move.

We can calculate this speed for helium gas at room temperature. It ends up being over 1100 m/s, which is around 4000 km/h or 2500 mph. Really fast!
