Cockscomb or Celosia is a very beautiful flowering plant – the Cockscomb also called celosia cristata. How to grow, care and propagate the cockscomb.
Celosia cristata also known as the COCKS COMB plant. It is a member of the genus Celosia in the amaranth family. It is called cockscomb, because the flower looks like the crest or comb on the head of a rooster (a cock). Its also known as Wool Flowers or Brain Celosia – a highly colored brain appearance.
Cockscomb plants are hardy and resistant to most diseases but the plant is susceptible to fungal diseases.
These plants do not grow much taller and are limited to 1 or 2 feet in height. There are many dwarf varieties of less than a feet and produce flowers, like the one you are seeing here.
The characteristic feature of these plants is, their attractive velvety flowers which are brightly colored, usually red, yellow, pink, or orange.
Now we shall discuss some points on How to grow or propagate and Care for this plant.
These are annuals and are mostly grown from seeds. So what is the meaning Annual, Biennial and Perennial plants. An annual is a plant that grows and then produces it’s seed or flowers and dies within one year. A biennial is a plant that grows for two years before setting its seed and then dying. A perennial is a plant that lives for more than two years like many of our common plants and trees.

Well coming back to the cockscomb, These are hardy and drought tolerant plants.
1. It needs a compost rich and a well draining soil. You can mix a lot of manure like decomposed cowdung into the soil. Also Mulching can be beneficial to these plants. Mulching means adding certain material like grass clippings, leaves, etc over the surface of the soil to retain moisture in the soil.
2. When buying from nursery, check the roots. Avoid plants with tangled, crowded roots, that’s is avoid root bound plants which will grow slowly or not at all. Also Be gentle when planting cockscomb because its roots are easily damaged during repotting.
3. Keep cockscomb in full sun or partial shade for best results.
4. Also fertilize it with NPK fertlizers like NPK 20 20 20 every 15 days like 5 to 6 crystals in a pot. You can also mix a teaspoon of bone meal powder into soil during repotting for best flowering results.
