
G major = 1 = the tonic
C major = 4 = the subdominant
D major (or D7) = 5 = the dominant
Then there is E minor, the relative minor of G major, the chord on the 6th degree.
And there is A (the dominant of the dominant), also called "supertonic", because it is one step above the tonic.
The chord diagrams show guitar chords where needed. The Nashville notation shows the degrees of the chords on the G major scale.
