Are India and Pakistan heading for another armed conflict over Kashmir? For nearly eight decades, the dispute between India and Pakistan over Kashmir has led to multiple wars and a persistent insurgency, making it one of the world's most volatile conflicts. Although the region had appeared relatively calm recently, the brutal attack on tourists in the Baisaran Valley, claimed by The Resistance Front, an offshoot of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, has reignited international concern. India has responded strongly, suspending diplomatic ties and key agreements with Pakistan, escalating fears of renewed conflict between these two nuclear-armed rivals.

The Kashmir conflict traces back to the 1947 partition of British India, resulting in longstanding territorial divisions between India, Pakistan, and China. Despite various peace efforts, fundamental disagreements over sovereignty, independence, and autonomy persist, compounded by deep mistrust and domestic political pressures. With India's controversial revocation of Kashmir's autonomy in 2019, tensions have heightened further, creating an environment ripe for instability. As global powers remain reluctant to mediate, and given the severe humanitarian and geopolitical stakes, the latest violence threatens to escalate into another dangerous phase, raising critical questions about the future stability of South Asia.
