On 19 May 1987, ITN attended a press conference hosted by UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and the frontbench of her Conservative government, she launched her party's manifesto for that year's general election. Among her cabinet colleagues was Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson, the man behind the economic proposals which Thatcher described as "the real radical policies". Entitled 'The Next Moves Forward', the manifesto's contents was hailed by the Tories as taking power away from local authorities and giving it back to individuals. Its critics, however, argued the policies would only serve to worsen existing inequalities.
