Come join us as we visit the forest that inspired Disney's famous Bambi as we visit the Arrayanes Forest just outside of the town of Villa La Angostura, Patagonia, Argentina. Before getting on the boat we had to pay de admission to Arrayanes National Park. The cost varies depending on wether you’re a foreign visitor, national resident, or provincial resident, but we paid the equivalent of 9 dollars per person. The boat trip was beautiful! Truth is, it was the perfect day to be out on the lake. There was hardly any wind, the waters were calm, and the sun was shining. What else could we ask for? We really enjoyed that this was a small group excursion and that our captain also shared lots of interesting bits of information about the place as we travelled along the peninsula.

We disembarked at the Arrayanes Forest and went on a short guided walk with our group. From this point, those who were planning to hike stayed back, and those who were continuing their boat excursion hopped back onboard.

The main forest circuit is 800 metres in length, takes 30 minutes to complete, and you’re on a boardwalk the whole time. Lots of excursions stop here, so sometimes it can get a little bit crowded, but it’s always a quick visit, so if you’re in no rush and don’t mind waiting a little bit, you’ll be able to have the whole forest to yourself.

As we mentioned, the hiking trail from the Arrayanes forest to the port in Villa La Angostura is 12 kilometres in length and takes about 3 hours to complete. Once you get off the boardwalk and onto the trail, the path is well marked and it’s a pretty straightforward hike. Most of the trail was flat, though we did encounter some steeper stretches towards the very end.

Along the way, we saw lots of arrayanes trees. The most unusual thing about these trees is that when you touch their trunks and branches, they feel quite cool - even on a hot summer day. This is because the arrayan has a very thin bark that allows you to feel the sap that flows within. You really need to test it out if you ever encounter one of these trees.

The last stretch of the trail was the hardest because we had to climb some pretty steep slopes, plus we were just generally tired from a long day of hiking. That being said, this is also were we encountered some of the most impressive views of the day, and there were numerous lookout point where we could stop to rest and soak in the landscapes all around us.

And that was our day trip to the Arrayanes Forest - aka the inspiration behind the movie Bambi. At some point we just stopped filming because well, we were pretty tired and hungry, but hopefully this video gave you a better idea of what this excursion is all about. As always, thanks for watching and we’ll see you in our next video!

🌳 Bosque Los Arrayanes Day Trip – Boat Ride, Ancient Cinnamon Trees & Epic Hike | Villa La Angostura, Patagonia Travel Guide

🚤 Getting to Bosque Los Arrayanes – Boat Ride Adventure

Our adventure begins in the beautiful mountain town of Villa La Angostura, Patagonia, where we set out to explore the legendary Bosque Los Arrayanes (Arrayanes Forest). This magical forest is renowned for its rare cinnamon-colored trees—some of which are over 600 years old! We opted for a scenic boat ride to the peninsula (about $17-18 USD per person, one way), after hearing from our Airbnb hosts that smaller boats with guides provide the best experience. There are a few ways to reach the forest: by large catamaran, small guided boat, hiking the full 24 km round-trip, or even by bike for the adventurous. Getting to the port was quick and easy via a $4 USD taxi, though public transportation and walking are also options. Don't forget to factor in the national park admission fee—$9 per person for foreigners, with lower rates for locals.

🌞 Perfect Patagonia Weather & Stunning Scenery

We totally lucked out with the weather: clear blue skies, calm waters, and sunshine made for a phenomenal start. Our small group cruise was not just scenic but informative too, with the captain sharing tidbits about the local environment and the ancient peninsula along Lake Nahuel Huapi. As we glided across the water, mountain views and pristine nature had us reaching for our cameras non-stop!

🌲 Exploring the Arrayanes Forest – Boardwalk Circuit

With energy restored, we ventured onto the main circuit: an 800-meter boardwalk through the thick of the Arrayanes Forest. Even on busy days, this short walk is worth it for a close-up look at the famous orange-brown trees, whose cool, smooth bark is like nothing else on earth.

🗺️ Hiking Back to Villa La Angostura – Lost and Found

Next came the main challenge: hiking the 12-kilometer trail back to town. After a comical “dodo bird” moment where we got briefly lost on the boardwalk loop, we found the real trailhead (just follow the sign and lift the rope!).
