Today we are going back to the classic year of 1983 and counting down the top 10 songs of this same week and then we’re going to put the actual top 10 plus some other great songs from that week and recalibrate them to tell you what the real top 10 songs are based on all-time streams, views and radio play. 4 decades later you’ll see what lasted and which ones died. And we have interviews, stories, and your comments… including The Clash who wrote Rock the Casbah protesting Iran banning Disco songs, as well as a song that failed on the charts until a soap opera used it, and then it went to #1 after it’s broadcast. Then a duet between the two biggest stars in music that was a huge letdown to the backing band because it was so cheesy and another song that a legend wrote a big old middle finger to the media. I’ll tell you what there’s no autotune here, just absolute talent. Coming up next on Professor of Rock.

It’s time for another edition of our show the Hit Song Redux where we travel back to a week in the golden era of rock and roll and re-rank the top 10 songs of THAT SPECIFIC week based on their legacy since THEIR PEAK POSITION ON THE BILLBOARD HOT 100. With the actual artist commentary Your stories To clarify, this isn’t my top 10. It’s the actual top 10 from this exact week 39 years ago. I just take those ten songs and run them through a recalibration system which tells us what the real top 10 is based on all time streams and views.

This program is a tribute to the great Casey Kasem’s American Top 40… this time we travel back to this exact week in the year 1983. January 1983 was a great time to be alive. Tootsie, 48 Hrs, and the Dark Crystal were tops at the Box office after the holiday rush, and Then everyone was watching Dallas, Mash, and Magnum P.I. on TV.

So coming in at #10 two country music stars that crossed over so well individually that paired them up for one of the great early 80s duets. It’s Crystal Gale and Eddie Rabbit with You and I. Like many of you, I knew Crystal Gale first from her long hair that was so legendary it almost touched the ground and Eddie Rabbit was the kind-hearted guy that seemed like a favorite uncle.

This crossover hit celebrates the bond of matrimony between a man and woman and looks at the past, the present and predicts pure joy and resilience for the future. These two voices blended perfectly together This was written by the Nashville songwriter/musician Frank J. Myers. He would later collaborate with Gary Baker and write the hit I Swear. This song was the first single from Eddie Rabbitt’s eighth album, was a massive crossover success: it topped the Hot Country Songs chart, reached number two on AC, and hit seven on the Hot 100.
