About making the lightning art, here's how it's done:
1. Start with a Big Plastic Slab: They use a large, clear piece of acrylic plastic, which is like Plexiglas.
2. Charge it Up: The plastic slab is placed in a machine that shoots it with a very powerful beam of electrons. This beam has 5 million electron volts of energy! The slab is hit from one side, then flipped over and hit from the other side.
3. Create Charged Layers: This beam puts a huge amount of extra electrons into the slab, forming two charged layers about half an inch below the surface.
4. Release the Charge: To make the lightning pattern, they poke the slab with a sharp metal point. This creates a small hole, letting the trapped charge escape in a big, bright flash and a loud bang. This makes a lightning-like pattern inside the slab.
5. Permanent Lightning Pattern: The discharges leave behind tiny tubes and fractures in the plastic, capturing the path of the lightning permanently. This creates a 3D pattern inside the slab, known as a Lichtenberg figure or "beam tree."
