In a high-stakes game of wits and deception, Westley—disguised as the mysterious Man in Black—finally catches up to Vizzini, who is holding Princess Buttercup hostage. In order to rescue her without violence, Westley proposes a deadly challenge: a battle of intellect over two identical cups of wine, one of which has been poisoned.Vizzini, arrogant and overconfident, agrees. Westley turns away for just a moment to give Vizzini a "fair" chance to choose, and during this brief moment, Vizzini cleverly switches the cups. After a long, ridiculous monologue full of supposed logic and double-bluffs, Vizzini picks the cup in front of him—actually the one originally placed before Westley—and gulps it down with a smug grin.
But the twist is immediate and lethal. Vizzini freezes, laughs in triumph, and then drops dead instantly, the poison taking full effect.
Stunned, Buttercup asks how Westley knew which cup was safe. That’s when Westley reveals his masterstroke: he poisoned both cups, but has spent years building up an immunity to the toxin known as iocane powder. No matter which cup Vizzini chose, he was doomed.
