In 1984, NASA's STS-51A mission aboard Space Shuttle Discovery became the first and only shuttle mission to retrieve and return two satellites from orbit. Astronauts Joseph P. Allen and Dale A. Gardner conducted untethered spacewalks using the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) to capture the stranded Westar-6 and Palapa B2 satellites, which had failed to reach proper orbit. They manually secured the satellites in the shuttle's payload bay for return to Earth.
