Between 7 and 13 November 1975, Angola faced a power struggle as independence neared. The Soviet-backed MPLA (Movimento Popular de Libertação de Angola; Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola) held Luanda, defeating the US-sponsored FNLA (Frente Nacional de Libertação de Angola; National Liberation Front of Angola) at Quifangondo on 10 November. The MPLA declared independence on 11 November, opposed by a rival FNLA / UNITA government, sparking a long civil war fuelled by Cold War tensions. ITN journalist Mike Nicholson covered the buildup to independence and its immediate aftermath, producing a series of reports Angola descended into civil war.
