This was the first of 3 Popeye cartoon promos we did for Dickinson Theatres in the early-mid 90's. As a lifelong Popeye fan, I was thrilled to be working with the salty ol' cuss. I was surprised by how little control King Features kept on the Popeye character. We really didn't get much in the way of model sheets or instruction. The voices were all local from San Antonio, and include DJ Sonny Melendrez as the voice of Popeye. King Features gave me the impression they didn't really care too much as long as they were getting their licensing fee. This also illustrates the problem we had doing these short promos, trying to tell a story and sell an item in less than 30 seconds and have it make any kind of sense and still be entertaining.
