The Power of Reading Aloud to Kids

We love stories in our family. Telling them, living them, and reading them. And I hope that’s something our kids will always remember about their childhood as they grow older.

Reading out loud to my kids has always been super important to me. It’s something I want to continue doing even after they learn how to read. It’s also something that has always felt attainable as a busy mom of now four littles. It gives me a chance to connect and be fully present with my kids in a meaningful way. At the end of my harder parenting days, it just seems right to finish with a book. At the end of our best days, it just seems right to finish with a book.

However, we read aloud far more often than just at bedtime. We read aloud in hammocks, on trampolines, on our back deck and by campfires. We read aloud over breakfast, in rocking chairs, on quilts, and at the dinner table. We read aloud in car rides to snowy places or beneath the fireplace hearth. We read aloud by morning light, by candlelight, and by fireplace glow. We read aloud when we’re sick and when we’re healthy, when we’re traveling and when we’re at home, when we’re busy and when life is slower. It’s something we chose to prioritize and I hope we always do.
