"When I Need You" is a song written by Albert Hammond and Carole Bayer Sager. Its first appearance was as the title track of Albert Hammond's 1976 album 'When I Need You'. Leo Sayer's version, produced by Richard Perry, was a massive hit worldwide, reaching number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in 1977 after three of his earlier singles had stalled at number 2. It also reached number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks.

Leo Sayer (born 1948) is an English singer-songwriter who has been active since the early 1970s. He has been an Australian citizen and resident since 2009. The peak of his career came in 1977, when he achieved two consecutive number one hits in the US, first with "You Make Me Feel Like Dancing" followed by a romantic ballad "When I Need You" which reached number one in both the UK and U.S.
Sayer and his wife Janice married in 1973 and divorced in 1985. He then had a relationship with Donatella Piccinetti and they moved to Australia. In 2023, Sayer married his long time partner of 40 years. They lives in the Southern Highlands of New South Wales. Leo Sayer remains active in music, engaging with fans through performances.
