Caring for an English Lavender hedge:

💙 First find out what type of lavender you have! French, Spanish and English lavender need different pruning. My hedge is made up of two varieties of English lavender: Hidcote and Munstead grown from tiny plug plants in 2018.

💙 Pruning is necessary to stop the plant going to straggly and unkempt and should be done at least once a year.

💙 August after flowering is the best time! Only reduce the green branches by a third and don’t cut into old wood, as this might kill the plant.

💙 Pruning at this time gauges the plant time to recover and heal the cut branches before winter and start producing new growth.

💙 If you forget to prune after summer and do it in winter instead 😆 only cut the old flower stems and the very tips of the branches now, and then prepare to do it properly at the end of the summer. This is to ensure you’ll have the healthiest plants.

💙Note that this advise is for UK only, harsher winters might mean you are better off leaving the flower heads on until spring as it gives some protection for the plant.
Last year I did this job with a hand held hedge trimmer but that got stolen this summer… so now I’m doing this by hand, but quick job anyhow! Just don’t use secateurs if you have a long hedge like this 😆 (been there, done that, got the sore wrist to prove it!)
