On 6 February 1995, Diana, Princess of Wales visited Japan's National Children's Hospital in Tokyo to open the Peter Pan Children's Fund. It was the Princess' first engagement of a three day visit to Japan that came just three weeks after more than 6,400 Japanese citizens were killed in the Great Hanshin Earthquake. After landing at Tokyo's Haneda Airport, Diana was taken straight to the children's hospital, where she met staff, patients, and parents before giving a speech in which she began by speaking Japanese.
