Hegseth backs Iran strikes, blasts media over intel leaks

U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Wednesday strongly defended the recent American airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear sites, calling them “precise, justified, and necessary to prevent Tehran from achieving nuclear breakout.” Speaking at a Pentagon briefing, Hegseth also lashed out at the media over what he described as “dangerous and politically motivated intelligence leaks,” following reports that U.S. strikes only set back Iran’s nuclear program by a matter of months.

“The leaks about the impact of the strikes are incomplete, speculative, and undermine our strategic position,” Hegseth said. “The operations were not symbolic. They were calibrated to send a message and limit Iran’s future capability.”

Meanwhile, in Tehran, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei downplayed the significance of the U.S. and Israeli air campaign, calling it “nothing but a display of showmanship” by President Donald Trump. In a televised speech, Khamenei said the attacks had inflicted “limited physical damage” and were aimed more at “saving face” for Western governments than altering Iran’s strategic direction.

“Trump wanted a spectacle, not a result,” Khamenei said. “The Islamic Republic remains unshaken, and our enemies should not mistake fire and noise for victory.”

His comments come amid a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel, which followed 12 days of escalating conflict. While the U.S. has declared no further strikes are planned unless provoked, tensions remain high, especially with Iran warning of further retaliation if provoked again.

Hegseth, in his remarks, also reiterated the administration's line: “Our mission was never about regime change. It was about stopping Iran’s nuclear ambitions. And we did just that — decisively.”
