Today we celebrate the heavenly birthday of Nick Menza—born July 23, 1964—a thunderous force in the world of metal and one of the most iconic drummers in Megadeth history. If he were still with us, Nick would be turning 61 today.
Nick’s explosive talent helped define Megadeth’s classic era, powering through four legendary albums: Rust in Peace, Countdown to Extinction, Youthanasia, and Cryptic Writings. With blazing double kicks, razor-tight fills, and unstoppable stage presence, he laid the rhythmic foundation for some of thrash metal’s most iconic anthems—Holy Wars, Hangar 18, Symphony of Destruction, and more.
Beyond the stage, Nick was a creative, kind, and passionate musician who left a lasting mark on fans and fellow artists alike. He passed away on May 21, 2016, tragically while doing what he loved—performing live on stage.
Happy Heavenly Birthday, Nick—you’ll forever be the heartbeat of Megadeth’s golden age.
