Holy smokes! Hyeon Chung was one of the fastest rising stars in tennis. Unfortunately his rapid rise would falter just as quickly due to serious career ending injuries.

At the Auatralian Open 2018, Chung made his breakthrough into the limelight by becoming the first South Korean player to advance past the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament.

In the third round, he achieved his first victory over a Top 10 player, convincingly defeating world No. 4 Alexander Zverev in five sets. In the next round, Chung won a straight sets match against six-time Australian Open champion and former world number one Novak Djokovic who had just returned from injury. Chung’s defence was his weapon, similar to Djokovic’s strength. Which made this duel a spectacle for the tennis world to see Djokovic beaten at his own game..

This marked the first time since 2007 Djokovic had lost in straight sets at the Australian Open. In the quarterfinals, Chung defeated unseeded American Tennys Sandgren reach his first Grand Slam semifinal.

Chung played Roger Federer in the semi-final, but sadly had to withdraw due to foot blisters when he was close to going two sets down. This semi final result would also sadly be the peak of his career as he would suffer lingering back issues which stopped him reaching the heights of the game. #tennis #chung #djokovic #zverev
