Egypt, the most populous Arab nation, is facing a growing food security crisis. With 90% of its land covered in desert and a rapidly increasing population, Egypt must find new ways to feed its people. In this video, we explore Egypt’s incredible artificial river project—one of the largest desert farming initiatives in the world.
Stretching from the Rosetta Branch of the Nile, this mega project aims to convert 9,240 square kilometers of uninhabited desert into fertile farmland. The project includes the El Hammam Water Treatment Plant, one of the world’s largest irrigation facilities, designed to purify 7.5 million cubic meters of water daily.
So far, 4,200 square kilometers of desert have already been turned into productive land. Once completed, this project will increase Egypt’s total farmland by 23%, create 5 million jobs, and help solve the looming food shortage caused by urbanization and overpopulation.
But will this project succeed in the long run? That remains to be seen. Watch the full video to understand how Egypt is transforming its future, one pipeline at a time.
