The 8AR-FTS was an experimental engine, being the first turbocharged production engine since the 1JZ and 2JZ series in the mid 1990's. It is a 2.0L turbocharged 4 cylinder that has overly complicated itself with various technologies, such as having three thermostats, oil controlled piston squirters, liquid intercooler, and various other complications that come with having modern turbochargers.
The engine in this video is transversely mounted from a 2015 Lexus NX200T with 147,000km on it. It was removed for an overheating concern. The engine was taken apart to find that the headgasket may have warped or been breached, as piston #2 & 3 seemed to have evidence of coolant intrusion.
