Donald Trump and his Republican allies have been trashing Bishop Mariann Budde all week after she called out his anti-Christian immigration policies at a Prayer Breakfast on Tuesday, and now a whole new group of Bishops is jumping in to pile on Trump’s plans. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops sent a letter criticizing Trump’s deportation plans and called for mercy and compassion, just like the Bible calls for. Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins explains what happened.

Donald Trump and his allies have spent most of the week attacking Bishop Marion bud over the uh, I guess sermon she gave earlier this week where she specifically called upon Donald Trump to follow what the Bible says and, you know, show compassion and mercy for all of the people that he wants to deport. Bud reminded him that, of course, the Bible says, to embrace these people to take care of them and protect them, whereas Donald Trump, of course, wants to get them the hell outta here because he simply doesn't care. And a lot of his followers, most of them, if not almost all of them are in agreement with that and they want it to happen. And they have supported Donald Trump through his attacks on the Bishop, well, maybe a little bit late to the party, but finally showing up is the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. They sent a letter this week where they echoed Bishop Bud's statement saying this, some provisions contained in the executive orders such as those focused on the treatment of immigrants and refugees for aid expansion of the death penalty and the environment are deeply troubling and will have negative consequences no matter who occupies the White House or holds the majority on Capitol Hill.
The church's teachings remain unchanged. So right there, great statement, right? I'm about to continue it in a minute, and that's where things get a little dicey, but they're basically saying, listen, if you want to, as Republicans claim to follow the Bible, you guys are doing it all wrong. Like you're literally just going against every single thing in the Good book. If the Bible tells you to do something, you guys seem like you want to do the exact opposite of it. So kudos to the bishops for writing this letter up to that point, because here's where things take a bit of a turn. They continue. Our prayer is one of hope that as a nation blessed with many gifts, our actions demonstrate a genuine care for our most vulnerable sisters and brothers, including the unborn, the poor, the elderly, and infirm and migrants and refugees. I know you caught the same part that I did because you see counsel or conference of bishops with the Catholic church, that one part you put in there is the only thing that the church has been hyper-focused on for literally decades, the unborn. And we know you're not referring to giving, you know, prenatal care to pregnant women. No, you're talking about abortion and that's the only thing y'all have cared about up to this point. And that of course, is
What has led us to the calamity that we have in the White House today. That's what has led to the deaths of women across this country ever since states started enacting their abortion bans. You got that, you did that, you gave Republicans something to campaign on and basically launched the culture wars, but now you're worried that all of these other things Republicans are doing are, are against what the Bible says, but it's too late. You helped cause this. It's great that you're calling him out now on all of the other things, but honestly, you could have been calling out the entire Republican party for all of those other things for decades, and you chose not to because you only focused on the one issue. That was the only thing that mattered until now. Well, you got what you wanted and that includes the guy occupying the White House that you seem to have a problem with today.
