The grim anniversary comes amid an unprecedented economic and financial meltdown, and a political stalemate that has kept the country without a functioning government for a full year. United in grief and anger, families of the victims and other Lebanese were planning prayers and protests later in the day.
The explosion killed at least 214 people, according to official records, and injured thousands.
Protesters took to the streets of Beirut to mark the anniversary, demanding justice for the victims. Wrapped in Lebanese flags, protesters held pictures of some of the victims as they marched in the streets near the port where the blast happened.
Meanwhile, a commemorative mass took place from the Beirut Port Main Esplanade marking the tragedy’s anniversary. The solemn mass was lead by Patriarch Bechara al Rahi.
Plus, residents of the city spoke about the traumatic day.
