The tale of the Edmund Fitzgerald kicked off on a chilly November day in one thousand nine hundred seventy-five when this huge ship took off across the Great Lakes. Known as the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, this giant freighter was the biggest of its time on these waters and was a symbol of cutting-edge engineering. But, it wasn't equipped to handle the harsh nature of Lake Superior. On November ninth, Captain Ernest McSorley, who had over forty years of sailing experience, led his crew of twenty-nine men. They were carrying twenty-six thousand tons of iron ore pellets headed for a steel plant near Detroit. The trip began smoothly, but trouble started as they got closer to the eastern parts of Lake Superior, where a lethal storm awaited them. However, as the storm grew fiercer, the ship's problems increased. Issues like leaks, radar breakdowns, and damage to the lifeboats were reported. Even with these worrying signs, McSorley’s last radio message at seven-ten PM on November tenth was unexpectedly calm: "We are holding our own." Just a little while later, the ship disappeared from radar, leaving behind only unanswered questions and deep sorrow.
