The men’s competition field at the 2023 ISA World Surfing Games got a lot smaller as three repechage rounds tested the world’s best and brought some surprising underdogs into the spotlight.
World No.1 Griffin Colapinto and Senegal’s Cherif Fall are among the top names who were eliminated as the competition heads closer to the heats that decide which athletes will qualify directly to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
All surfers, including USA’s John John Florence, competed in multiple back-to-back on a day where three repechage rounds were decided.
Florence made it through to his three heats, as did South Africa’s Matthew McGillivray. Brazil’s Filipe Toledo and Joao Chianca also made it through the busy repechage schedule to keep their world title hopes alive for the next rounds. While most of the top names survived the repechage marathon, there were also some major exits. Cherif Fall ended his run for the African qualification spot at Paris 2024 in the second repechage round, while USA’s Colapinto decided to pull out of the event.
