One year after being accidentally left behind by his family, 10-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is once again preparing to spend Christmas with his family. This time, the McCallisters are headed to Florida. But at the airport, a mix-up causes Kevin to board a different flight—this one bound for New York City.
Now alone in the Big Apple, Kevin checks into the luxurious Plaza Hotel using his father's credit card. He enjoys the high life—ordering room service, visiting toy stores, and exploring the city. However, things take a turn when Kevin runs into his old enemies: Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern), the bumbling burglars he outsmarted in the first film. The pair have escaped from prison and are plotting a new heist—to rob the toy store Duncan’s Toy Chest on Christmas Eve.
Kevin decides to foil their plan. Armed with his signature resourcefulness, he sets up a series of elaborate booby traps inside his uncle’s vacant townhouse, preparing for a rematch against the two crooks. Meanwhile, Kevin befriends a kind-hearted homeless woman in Central Park who helps him understand the true meaning of Christmas.
Eventually, the police arrest Harry and Marv, thanks to Kevin's intervention. Mr. Duncan, the toy store owner, rewards Kevin for saving his store, and Kevin reunites with his family on Christmas morning at the Plaza Hotel. The film ends with a heartwarming message about love, forgiveness, and the importance of being with family during the holidays.
