Outgoing Goa Governor and University Chancellor P. S. Sreedharan Pillai has strongly denied allegations of bias and regional favouritism in the functioning of Goa University during his tenure.Responding to criticism that Malayalis or “dhotiwalas” were controlling the university, Pillai called it “unfortunate propaganda” and categorically dismissed the claims. “I selected the Vice Chancellor based on three names recommended to me under the prevailing system. There was no favouritism involved,” he said in an interview with Head-On.
Challenging the narrative, Pillai said, “Point out a single person from Kerala appointed by the Vice Chancellor, and I am ready to end my public life. I only nominated two Malayalis to the executive council, which is my constitutional prerogative. In the past, five members from North India were part of the same council—no one questioned that then.”
Pillai said he was leaving the university in a better academic position than he found it. “When I took over, Goa University was graded B+. Today, it has moved up to A+. That is the legacy I leave as Chancellor,” he added.
His remarks come amid growing political and academic debate over appointments and governance at Goa University, ahead of his formal exit as Governor.
