Egypt and South Africa might be regarded as one of Africa’s strongest militaries but in recent times, Burkina Faso has grown to become formidable in Airpower. This is all thanks to President Traore who saw the necessity of transforming his country from one that was inadequate to one that is competent. Indeed, Burkina Faso has come a long way from being a country that needed the approval of France before it could get military equipment to one that has invested massively in its military defense capabilities. But how did Traore manage to take his country to this point? Let’s find out.
Before President Traore came into the picture, Burkina Faso, just like the other Francophone countries, was under the control of France. France dictated and influenced everything from politics to economics and even the military, thanks to the colonial pact. You see, the colonial pact signed between the 14 Francophone countries and France ensured that France maintained control over their economies, foreign currency reserves, and raw materials and resources. The pact also ensured that France could station its troops in their countries with free passage and demanded that all military equipment be acquired from France or with France’s approval.
