This is a deep dive / video essay about the domino effect that the release of Frank Ocean’s Blonde had on the music industry and how it answers many of the current mysteries of the business. Why are artists dropping on Instagram & YouTube but not on streaming? Why is the music industry diving head first into AI? What’s up with all the nostalgia? Why aren’t there any new superstars? Why are labels dropping artist? Direct to Consumer Distribution from the Labels (Roc Nation what is happening??). All roads lead back to Frank Ocean finessing his label in 2016.

While Frank Ocean has stayed relatively quiet in the wake of his divisive Coachella 2023 performance (still salty, I was there the second weekend), his impact on the industry both musically and business wise is undeniable. The double release of his 2016 Apple Music exclusive albums Endless & Blonde mark a pivotal moment in music where the power dynamics between the musicians and the executives completely shifted and ultimately changed their approach to working with others in it’s wake.

Does Frank Ocean still make music? I’m not sure but he’ll never be forgotten for what he pulled off.
