Oh how this lovely pair can bring us all such joy! They did it again mid-week with a full day of activity and entertainment! Jackie began the fun when she brought a whole fish to the nest for an early lunch, gobbling it down within just a few minutes. As she was cleaning up after her yummy meal, Shadow circled the nest with his new stick before flying in and landing next to Jackie. As usual, he checked around for leftovers, but this time he arrived just a little too late, so he went to work moving his new stick. Not too much work was done before some ravens came around. Since they persisted, Shadow decided he'd go out and chase them off. Jackie decided to lay down for a couple of minutes to test the nest for comfort before heading out again to gather more sticks.
The afternoon was full of a little of everything… nest work, flirting, beaky kisses, new sticks and chortles. Lumber Jackie then hauled in stick #5, the final stick of the day, a huge wonky branch! Shadow grabbed one end in his beak and Jackie took the other in hers. They circled around with it together, as if they were dancing the tango in perfect harmony! But where to put it??!!
Jackie decided to take over, carrying it all around the nest as Shadow looked on. The humongous guardrail finally ended up fitting perfectly on the right side of the nest, but not without a little help from Shadow. It seems it does take two to tango when it comes to sticks that big!
Both spent about 2.5 hrs in the nest and the day ended with late afternoon vocals which could have been mating vocals. All in all, good signs for hopefully what is to come!
Before Jackie is ready to lay eggs, she generally spends much more time laying in the nest as she prepares. More fluff will also be brought in closer to egg laying as well as after, so no worries, there is still time as we wait for nature to take its course.
