Why West Africa Is On The Verge Of War
Africa is often portrayed as a continent ravaged by war, terrorism, and political instability. However, history will tell you that inter-state violent conflicts are rare in West Africa. Of course, there have been a few skirmishes between these countries like the minor armed confrontation between Burkina Faso and Mali in 1985, but West Africa has been relatively peaceful, only having to deal with internal conflicts such as insurgencies and terrorism, since the year following independence. Unfortunately, it seems this situation is about to change as the recent coup in Niger might probably bring West Africa to war.

In a move that has surprised the West which until now considered Niger an anchor of stability in the region, troops of the country’s presidential guard deposed President Mohamed Bazoum on Wednesday, July 26, 2023. While the coup plotters blamed rising insecurity and a lack of economic growth as the reason for the coup, stating that the intervention was necessary to avoid “the gradual and inevitable demise” of the country, some other people believe that General Tchiani, head of the coup orchestrated the coup because he feared he was going to be fired by President Bazoum who had planned to restructure the presidential guard.
