From my hotel room at the Yanggakdo International Hotel, I take a closer look at one of Pyongyang’s most celebrated construction projects—new apartment buildings for professors and teachers. Our guides proudly emphasized how quickly they were built, but through the windows, we noticed something strange: many appeared empty and unfinished.
This hotel has a dark history. It’s the same place where American tourist Otto Warmbier was arrested for allegedly taking down a propaganda poster, leading to his tragic fate. The hotel is also infamous for its mysterious fifth floor, which is strictly off-limits to foreigners.
In this video, I also capture the Ryugyong Hotel, the massive, triangular skyscraper that has remained incomplete for decades. Officials claim it will be finished soon—but we had our doubts.
