"A Winter's Tale" was originally performed by David Essex on his 1983 album, The Whisper. Written by Mike Batt and Tim Rice, the song was first released as a single in 1982, peaking at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. It was later included on Essex's album The Whisper in 1983.

Smokie's Version of "A Winter’s Tale" 1996
Smokie covered the song for their 1996 Christmas album, Light a Candle. By that time, Chris Norman had long since left the group (in 1986). Alan Barton had taken over as lead vocalist but tragically passed away in a car accident in 1995. Mike Craft then joined the band as the new lead singer, continuing Smokie's legacy.

The lineup for Smokie's Light a Candle recording in 1996 was:
Alan Silson: Guitar, vocals (original member)
Terry Uttley: Bass, vocals (original member)
Mike Craft: Lead vocals
Steve Pinnell: Drums
